“Architecture begins with listening and collaborating. It shapes places in harmony with nature. It celebrates exploration, discovery, and community”
Buzz Yudell’s passion for architecture grew out of a synthesis of artistic and social concerns. At Yale College, he focused on the connections between the arts, sciences, and humanities. At Yale School of Architecture, he was inspired to work at a range of scales from houses to communities, all united by a celebration of craft, collaboration and placemaking.
Buzz and John have worked to expand the firm’s expression and expertise to include campus, cultural, civic, residential, and commercial architecture. Working in Europe for over thirty years inspired innovative approaches to sustainable architecture and communities locally and globally.
Buzz has led project design on a broad array of educational projects at leading universities including MIT, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Riverside, Washington University in St. Louis, Dartmouth, Caltech, University of Cincinnati, University of Denver, ASU, and Shanghai Tech. He has lead master planning for sustainable campuses, communities and civic buildings globally.
Teaching, writing, and community service have been critical to his leadership in shaping and celebrating place and community. He has taught at Yale, UCLA, UT Austin, and was honored to hold the distinguished Howard Friedman Chair of Architecture at UC Berkeley.
Buzz has been included in Architectural Digest’s “AD 100” list of global design leaders, for an influential body of residential design.
In 2006, Buzz and John’s leadership was recognized by the National American Institute of Architects Firm Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed on an American architecture firm. In 2007 Buzz and John shared the American Institute of Architects Los Angeles Gold Medal Award.
